About Ron S. Israeli, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Ron S. Israeli, M.D., F.A.C.S., is the director of urologic oncology at Staten Island University Hospital. He is the only fellowship-trained urologic cancer specialist in the area. Dr. Ron S. Israeli is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Israeli was raised in New York, and attended Stuyvesant High School in NYC. He received a B.A. in biology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. While at Hopkins, Dr. Israeli published extensively on interferons, which are naturally-occurring cancer fighting molecules. Dr. Israeli received his medical degree from SUNY Health Sciences Center at Stony Brook and then spent several years training in general surgery at SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn.
Following his surgery residency, he received a two-year special research fellowship award from the National Cancer Institute and spent that time working on prostate cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. While at Memorial, Dr. Israeli identified and cloned the gene for a new prostate specific antigen and developed several exquisitely sensitive prostate cancer detection tests. He has published and lectured extensively on his discoveries and has been awarded numerous national awards for his work, including the prestigious first prize in clinical research from the American Urological Association in 1994. To date, Dr. Israeli has amassed over 55 papers and major abstracts.
Following this successful research fellowship, Dr. Israeli trained in general urology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Finally, after completing his urology residency, Dr. Israeli returned to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to complete the premier clinical fellowship in urologic oncology in the United States, performing hundreds of complicated urologic cancer surgeries. In June 1997, Dr. Israeli joined the staff of Staten Island University Hospital and has established the Division of Urologic Oncology at the hospital's Nalitt Institute for Cancer.
